Covance Research Assistant II - Vet Operations in Alice, Texas

The Research Assistant will have hands on training and work with the facility veterinarian on surgeries, dosing, sutures (depending on experience). The hourly rate for the position is $17.00.
Perform initial assessment and physical examination of animals.
Obtain and submit diagnostic samples to laboratory.
Administer therapeutic modalities such as bandaging, splints, fluid therapy, safe application of external heart source etc.
Perform and assist veterinarian in various medical procedures, including handling and restraint of animals.
Accurate medical record keeping, timely documentation of all health care records, laboratory results, special requests supply orders, and Drug Enforcement Agency records for controlled substances.
Obtain diagnostic radiographs and maintain upkeep of equipment.
Schedule diagnostic ultrasound sessions with veterinary staff.
Maintenance and upkeep of equipment.
Dental procedures, such as routine cleaning, extractions.
Monitors animal anesthesia and recovery.
Assist in generating appropriate SOP’s for new capabilities.

Bachelor or Associates degree in Life Sciences. Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology or Veterinary Technology. Registered Vet Tech or Certified Vet Tech with a minimum of six months experience. Experience may be substituted for education requirements.
AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level desirable.
Ability to effectively interact with laboratory staff and clients.
Skilled in concise writing and intermediate level computer operations.
Ability to accurately read, record, and communicate information.
6 months of experience in a laboratory or veterinary setting preferred.
Knowledge of anatomic and physiologic variations in a wide variety of lab animals, animal husbandry, behavior, feeding, nutrition, diseases, and reproduction.
Applicants should be able to work with laboratory animals.
