Covance Senior Manager, Initiative Governance in NC, United States

Job Overview

The Initiative Governance Office (IGO) is the central hub for tracking strategic programs and projects across Covance’s Clinical Development & Commercialization Services (CDCS). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, portfolio and project-level tracking, including overall status, financial and operational performance tracking, risk identification and mitigation, knowledge management, change control, facilitating best practices and lessons learned sessions, and template/standards development.

The Senior Manager, Initiative Governance position will be office based in Cary, NC.

  • Function as a Senior Manager, Initiative Governance Office in Business Optimization, working directly with CDCS and other cross-functional operational groups and their leaders.

  • Responsible for the ongoing support, administration and management of the Initiative Governance Office.

  • Actively track and report on overall program and project status, including operational and financial performance to plan.

  • Manage the Initiative Governance Office demand management and intake process to ensure project prioritization is aligned with EPIC Growth Strategy and CDCS Objectives.

  • Develop tools and templates to support project execution methodology and work with internal project teams on tool/template usage.

  • Ensure effective cross-functional teamwork among project team members including both internal and external ancillary services.

  • Serve as primary point of contact for project issue escalation.

  • Resolve conflicts as needed.

  • Monitor project schedule and scope to ensure both remain on track.

  • Proactively engage in both quality assurance and risk management activities to ensure project deliverables are met.

  • Deliver project status updates to Business Optimization and CDCS Leadership as required.

  • Present at external and/or internal meetings.

Education/Qualifications

Required:

  • 5-7+ years’ experience working in a project management office or as a project/program manager

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.

  • Proven interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to inspire effective teamwork and motivate staff within a matrix system.

  • Good computer skills with good working knowledge of range of computer programs.

  • Working knowledge of project management processes.

  • Working knowledge of time and cost estimate development.

  • University/college degree – life sciences (preferred), business management, information technology, or finance.

Preferred:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

  • Process Improvement certification (Lean, Six Sigma).

  • Minimum of three (3) years supervisory/project management experience.

  • Minimum of 7 (7) years relevant experience in a pharmaceutical. company/CRO/business services industry.

Experience

  • Create required project plans. Implement and monitor progress against project plans and revise as necessary.

  • Establish working relationships with project teams which result in superior client satisfaction.

  • Prepare and deliver presentations in collaboration with relevant departments as required.

  • Meet financial performance targets for assigned project(s).

  • Manage and report out on project performance and financial metrics.

  • Identify individual training needs and assist in the conduct of training and development efforts.

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with management team to manage project staff in a matrix environment.

  • Maintain good working relationships with internal and external clients to ensure opportunity for acquiring additional new business.

  • Assure all systems, process and their outcomes comply with standards that meet applicable international and national regulations and guidelines, and Covance requirements.

  • Partner with operational experts to identify learning needs and possible solutions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

  • Demonstrate capabilities that support Covance’s EPIC Growth Strategy and EP3.
